The new iPad’s Retina screen is required to use the new display mode.: If you’re like us, you haven’t slept since March 16 because you’ve been enraptured by your new iPad with its stunning 264-DPI Retina screen. And you may have been wondering when Air Display will support the 2048×1536 resolution. Performance Tuning After Apple announced the new iPad on March 9, we worked like mad to add Retina resolution to Air Display. We got done in time, but of course we couldn’t ship the Air Display update until we had tested on a real iPad.

Just in case. It worked like a charm in the iPad simulator. Unfortunately when we got our new iPads and tested performance, we realized that the 4x increase in pixel count was killing our frame rates. So our engineers rushed back to the laboratory to experiment with codec settings, image filters, color spaces, threaded decompression, and god-knows-what-else. Frame Rates Finally we’ve got it working with good speed. What’s more, through all of this performance tuning and profiling, we’re delivering dramatically better frame rates on other devices as well.

Especially the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, which have dual-core CPU like the new iPad. Not only that, but this update will let you take advantage of Retina resolutions on iPhone 4 and 4S as well. HiDPI So you will be able to use your new iPad as a 2048×1536 computer monitor. But that’s not all! On Mac OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, you’ll be able to turn on HiDPI mode.

HiDPI is a hidden feature in Mac OS X that renders with double-resolution on a double-resolution screen. You’ll need to download the to enable HiDPI mode on your Mac running Lion.

The rumourmill has been busy lately with claims that we might get 'Retina display' Macs soon -- and of course, a Retina display iPad 3 on March 7, probably, maybe, definitely. Once the host app is installed on the Mac, which requires a reboot to get going, run Air Display 3 on the iPad. The Mac sees the iPad and it's instantly turned into a second monitor. You can resolve many display issues by updating the software on your Apple devices, cables, and adapters. If you can see an image on your screen, check for software updates using the Mac App Store. Connect your external display and any Apple video cables or adapters that you use with it.

The universal iPad/iPhone app, which isn’t cheap if you’re just wanting to play around. However, if you’ve considered extending your Mac’s display with an iPad or even iPhone, Air Display is the best app out there for the job.

If you like Air Display, please leave an App Store review for each update. Your comments do make a difference. By jday7757 I bought Air Display 3 for the sole purpose of being able to use my iPad Air 2 as a wireless mirrored display for my Retina iMac.

I was hoping to be able to run many of my MacOS apps using the iPad display. The result is absolutely terrible. Despite extremely fast wi-fi many apps would even open completely when using the app.

They will start to open and then the spinning color wheel just spins until I eventually have to go to my iMac and force quit the app. Also, for some reason the top menu bar on the mirrored iPad display is all black (I assume it is showing black text on a black bar which is not what my iMac displays).

If I move the cursor on the iPad to the location on the black bar where a menu item should be (i.e., the Apple icon, File, Edit, etc) and select I will get the dropdown menu, but it is trial and error trying to find the right icon (since it is obviously black text on black background). Even the aspects of the app that do work have extreme lag, again making this app virtually unusable. I really wanted this app to be as good as some of the reviews state, but for me it will be deleted. I just wish I could get back the wasted $9.99 I just spent on it.

It might work in other instances for people with different Apple computers and/or different needs, but for me it was a waste. By mmoore4249 I have a Mac Mini and was thinking of getting a Mac Air but found this app! I connected my Mac Mini to my iPad Pro and now have a 12.9 Retina display as my primary and only monitor when on the go. The Mac mini is small enough to carry in my pc bag with my iPad Pro.

So now when I am going to be stationary somewhere I just take both with me. The monitor looks amazing. The only issue is that when you boot the Mac Mini connected to only the iPad Pro you cannot see the login screen because the app is waiting for the program to load on the Mac. So I have to blindly login.

But once logged in the screen opens up. I am using the usb connection. Please find a way for this app to recognize the iPad from the Mac on the login screen when it is the only monitor being used and this will be a 5.

By chorriado Using Sierra with Air Display version 3.0.3. I've held off on giving this app a review to see if updates would fix issues but to no avail. I had version 1 a few years ago and was forced to purchase it again at version 3 for some reason. Quits after initial launch every time so have to re-launch. On the second launch it doesn't quit but there is serious lag. It's usable to reference something on another screen but I wouldn't count on being able to actually work with the documents opened on the secondary monitors using Air Display due to its lag.

Haven't seen any updates in the many months I've been using it. And to top it off, it is rather pricey for a less than mediocre experience.
