The best free A/S is Microsoft Defender. Spybot and AdAware are not as effective as they used to be. They help but don't cover as much as the paid software and especially are not as good at removal. AVG, Avast and Avira are all pretty good anti-virus, they are much closer to the paid alternatives, sometimes are better. Another reasonable one is Clamwin. Another obvious thing to do is ditch IE and use Firefox or Opera. Active X is just so easy to exploit.

Still, the nasties out there are catching on that firefox is a popular browser now and are sometimes targeting it as well as IE. I personally use Webroot Spysweeper for anti-spyware because it's active shields are by far the best and it's detection and removal rates have been consistently rated as best in category, and they do give you discounts if you keep your subs renewed. And I still use ZoneAlarm Security Suite, for a/v and firewall because having subscribed for years, they keep giving me money off coupons and it works great.
